Horse archery and lancing will work just fine, though it doesn’t allow you the slot space for a sword. You will found mountain bandits in the mountains, forest bandits by forests, and sea raiders by the sea, generally speaking, but they can move around quite a bit as they react to ai parties as well. Looters and bandits spawn randomly, but small packs of looters are generally only seen in the first week of the game to give starting players a bit of a boost. If you’re playing unmodded then high-tier mounted troops are also the best combat force you could ever want. Mounted troops let you make better speed on the overland map which lets you pick your fights, regardless of whether you want to chase down a pack of bandits or flee from an overwhelming force. Keep in mind that it’s a lot harder to play with infantry than cavalry. If you have nothing but foot troops I’d get 1/3-1/2 of those as archers and park all of them on a hill. Your Vaegir foot troops will eventually be able to promote into mounted troops so that’s something to consider. When you get companions you need to equip them with horses yourself but that’s it. Some troops are always mounted, others will have x% of the soldiers of that kind mounted. Is there somewhere small bands of these types are more likely to be found? An area on the map or in close proximity to something else (villages, castles, etc.)? Or is everything fairly random? So now I’m trying to train up some Recruits and a handful of Footmen (Vaegir) but am having trouble finding bands of looters/robbers/bandits to fight. But I assume that later on, when I’m leading 30 or 40 guys, it’s going to be a good idea to have squads of each type and assign them roles for more effective battlefield performance?įinally, most of my previous warband got wiped in a close encounter with mouted deserters (I was the only non-wounded survivor and had to take out the final three enemies myself, I had like 8 hit points left at the end).

Seems like that’s not really enough guys to split into infantry, archers and cavalry. At what point should I start thinking about combined arms? Right now my warbands are small, 10-15 guys tops. When I promoted some of my footmen to Veterans I noticed that I had a choice between making them into better melee troops or creating archer troops. Is this because of the extra horse, or do Vaegir troops become horsemen on their own when they reach Veteran status? If he was simply using my extra horse, that’s awesome, but it also means I’m going to need to use a few inventory slots for mounts for my warband, correct? During the next battle, one of my Vaegir veterans was mounted. I had an extra horse in my inventory after buying myself a new one. Couple of questions based on my gameplay so far: Still plugging away in my noobness and having fun.
